Words use in Digital Video!!

4-bit.  A 4-bit video display card can display 16 different colors for each pixel.

8-bit. An 8-bit video display card can display 256 different colors for each pixel.

16-bit. A 16-bit video display card can display 65,536 different colors for each pixel.

24-bit. A 24-bit video display card can display 16.7 million different colors for each pixel, and it is often referred to as true color.
Digital video

analog video. Video that is stored as an electrical signal with a continuous scale. Videotape and video-disc generally store analog video.

aspect ratio. The width-to-height ratio of an image. Changing the aspect ratio can make images appear out of proportion.

AVI (Audio Video Interleave). A Microsoft video file format that is used extensively on the Windows platform—especially for download and play files.

bandwidth. The transmission capacity of a telecommunications system. The greater the bandwidth, the greater the amount of digital information that can be transmitted per second.

capture. The process of collecting and saving text or image data. When an analog source such as a video-disc is used as a source to record a digital image on a computer, it is said to be “captured.”

CD-ROM (compact disc-read only memory). A prerecorded, nonerasable disc that stores approximately 650 megabytes of digital data.

Cinepak. A technique for software-only compression. It requires considerable compression time but results in high quality.
clip. A short video segment.

codec (compressor/decompressor). Software (or hardware) that can compress and decompress audio and video content.

compression. Technique used to store files with fewer bits; therefore, less disk storage space is required. Lossless compression preserves all image qualities, while lossy compression sacrifices some image quality for greater compression ratios.

digital camera. A camera that records images in true digital form. The images are usually downloaded directly into a computer.

digitizing. The process of converting an analog signal into a digital signal.

DV (digital video). Video that is stored in bits and bytes on a computer. It can be manipulated and displayed on a computer screen. Often used to refer to the format used by a digital camcorder with DV tapes. Also used to refer to the compression type used by DV systems.

DVD (digital video disc). A second generation of the original CD-ROM format. It provides up to two layers of digital information on a compact disc. It stores up to 4.7 gigabytes for one layer; 8.5 gigabytes for two layers.

EDL (Edit Decision List). A list of all the start points (timecode) and stop points used in video production.

FireWire. The Apple Computer trace name for the IEEE-1394 standard that enables direct transfer of digital video between devices, such as a camcorder and computer.

fps (frames per second). Describes the frame rate—the number of frames displayed each second.

frame. One complete video picture.

frame rate. The number of video frames displayed each second.

full-motion video. Video frames displayed at 30 frames per second.

G2. The codec that is used with RealMedia.

H.263. A digital video codec that was originally designed for videoconferencing (and is still used for that purpose, as well as web-based video applications).

IEEE-1394. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standard for high-speed ports and cables for a computer. Also known as FireWire and iLink.

iLink. The Sony trade name for IEEE-1394 standard.

image. A graphic, a picture, or one frame of a video.

Indeo. A software technique created by Intel to compress and decompress video.

interframe compression. A compression technique that stores only the differences between a frame and the subsequent frames.
